I've been designing and building websites professionally since 2009, mostly for small businesses and tradespeople, with clients across the UK, US, Germany, and Australia.
The genealogy side grew in parallel. I started researching my own family history, got drawn deeper into historical records, and eventually built several websites around it. The two strands turned out to have more overlap than I expected. Genealogy societies need the same things small businesses do: a proper web presence, reliable hosting, and someone who understands their audience and picks the right tools for the job.
After 15 years I've stopped having a favourite tech stack. What matters is matching the technology to what the site actually needs to do and who it needs to serve.
